The time has come, the wife said, to paint walls and ceilings. In the absence of completed plumbing and wiring we had been pressing ahead with the things which were in our control: surfaces. The kitchen was in pretty good nick overall, only really requiring a bit of filling here and there. With the plumbing and electrical chasing done in here, and those two made good, there was little holding back the tide of white.

After a morning of rounding up the wherewithal's to do the work, clan McDonald set to with brush and broom, sugar soap and mops. The plaster had been sealed up with PVA, all the holes polyfilla'd. Even the mildew on the walls had been scrubbed out of existence.

And so in commenced. Armed with quite literally the last four tins of white kitchen paint in Chippenham and the widest rollers and finest Harris brushes, the paint was laid on thick and fast.

What a transformation it makes! The blue ceiling, which we had come to accept and ignore was suddenly bright and challengingly normal. The walls, previously so dirty and dulled, now gleaming and reflective. Up the reflection goes, from about 60% up to 90%. The single flood light in the corner of the room cast its beams, over and over they bounced. We are very excited.
