Kitchen Week 1

Morning arrived with a great disgorging of the car. The  kitchen and utility were stripped of their plastic coverings and one last tile stuck down ready to be forever covered up with a cabinet. For now was the time to start filling the rooms up and to get creative with cabinetry.

Happily flat pack is pretty straightforward, especially the carcasses. It’s only the draws and doors which require a little thought but we didn’t really have any of those.

What did cause pause for though was the erection of the tall cabinets in the utility. When the long side of the cabinet is almost touching the ceiling, how do you assemble it then stand it upright? The diagonal across opposite corners would stick 10cm into the ceiling above. In two pieces was the eventual answer, and with some alternative fixings to those provided (as there’s no longer any access to them).

The other part of interest revolved around the pipes routed to the sink. Where they wrap around the wall so too must the cabinets. Whereas jigsaws can make light work of the wood, being able to accommodate the draws was a little less certain. Not having a choice is a fine driver in these circumstances, the only option is to suck it and see. Will the draw runners fit? Stay tuned to find out.
